Reaching Out to Survivors: Typhoon Haiyan, Philippines (A) and (B).Andrea L. Santiago & Fernando Y. Roxas - 2014 - Journal of Business Ethics Education 11:317-324.
This case illustrates the dilemma facing a medium-sized family business, EMME Logistics and Security Agency that wanted to do more for the victims of the 2013 Typhoon Haiyan. About a third of the company’s personnel had family in the hardest hit areas and were anxious to go to find out if their relatives had survived the wreckage caused by the strongest typhoon ever to hit landfall in the Phillipines. Committing the company’s resources to the relief operation would behampered by a (...)

In this article I suggest that in arguing that God has only present knowledge, falling short of the classical understanding of divine forekowledge, openview theologians imply a paradigmatic change in the hermeneutical principles of theological methodology. This change takes place when they abandon t..

    Twist-structures semantics for the logics of the hierarchy InPk.Fernando M. Ramos & Víctor L. Fernández - 2009 - Journal of Applied Non-Classical Logics 19 (2):183-209.
In this work we define, in a general way, an algebraic semantics for the logics of the hierarchy InPk. This semantics is defined by means of an alternative construction, with respect to the usual algebraic semantics, and it is known in the literature as Twist-structures semantics. Besides that, we modify such construction, defining the so-called ω-Twist-structures here. This adaptation allows us to prove adequacy theorems for every logic of the hierarchy InPk.

Medical professionalism: what the study of literature can contribute to the conversation.Johanna Shapiro, Lois L. Nixon, Stephen E. Wear & David J. Doukas - 2015 - Philosophy, Ethics, and Humanities in Medicine 10:10.
Medical school curricula, although traditionally and historically dominated by science, have generally accepted, appreciated, and welcomed the inclusion of literature over the past several decades. Recent concerns about medical professional formation have led to discussions about the specific role and contribution of literature and stories. In this article, we demonstrate how professionalism and the study of literature can be brought into relationship through critical and interrogative interactions based in the literary skill of close reading. Literature in medicine can question the (...)

    Rawls, modelos econômicos e o argumento pluralista.

Barreto - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
ObjectiveThe presence of two or more chronic diseases results in worse clinical outcomes than expected by a simple combination of diseases. This synergistic effect is expected to be higher when combined with some conditions, depending on the number and severity of diseases. Multimorbidity is a relatively new term, with the first fundamental definitions appearing in 2015. Studies usually define it as the presence of at least two chronic medical illnesses. However, little is known regarding the relationship between mental disorders and (...)

Can the use of psychedelic drugs induce lasting changes in metaphysical beliefs? While it is popularly believed that they can, this question has never been formally tested. Here we exploited a large sample derived from prospective online surveying to determine whether and how beliefs concerning the nature of reality, consciousness, and free‑will, change after psychedelic use. Results revealed significant shifts away from ‘physicalist’ or ‘materialist’ views, and towards panpsychism and fatalism, post use. With the exception of fatalism, these changes endured (...)

In 1913, the future psychologist and epistemologist Jean Piaget (1896-1980), then a seventeen-year-old naturalist, gave a talk criticizing 'the notion of the species according to the Mendelian school'. In it, he confounded Mendelism and mutationism, and misunderstood both. He attributed an environmental nature to the 'factors' postulated by Mendel's laws for inherited characteristics, and thought that mutations resulted from the appearance of a new environmental factor. Such misinterpretations are closely related to Piaget's assimilation of the Bergsonian critique of 'mechanistic' science (...)

This article attempts to show some of the principal areas in the relationship between abortion and philosophy following four movements. The problem is presented , then Plato's and Aristotle’s attitude with regard to abortion are analysed . Nextly there follows a synthetic overview of modern thought on the subject and some bioethical solutions that have deep philosophical roots are proposed . Finally the (...)

The article presents a reading of Badiou’s trilogy, L’Être et l’événement, Logiques des mondes, and L’Immanence des vérités, and points out the mathematical connections with the works of Cohen, Grothendieck, and large cardinal specialists. A synthetic rendering of these connections is first offered, following precise passages in Badiou’s work, then a category-theoretic and Peircean perspective is explored in order to specify the many dialectics in the trilogy, and, finally, some open problems are proposed.

The book tells the story of a philosophical tradition that is shaped by, and critically reacts to, major events in the history of the USA.

Situations serving as worlds as well as events in linguistic semantics are formulated as strings recording observations over discrete time. This formulation is applied to a linear temporal logic, in line with L. Schubert’s distinction between described and characterized situations. The distinction is developed topologically and computationally, and linked to the opposition between truth-conditional and proof-conditional semantics. For a finitary handle on quantification, strings are associated with situations not only on the basis of observation but also through derivation and constraint (...)
